Gene Norman is a creative and innovative award-winning Certified Broadcast Meteorologist with a 20-year record of excellence. He is considered a severe and tropical weather expert and exceptional forecaster. Gene has used his unique skills to elevate station ratings by pioneering a localized forecast approach. Gene's areas of expertise include but are not limited to: weather forecasting, radio and television broadcasting, reporting and public speaking. He is also an expert user of the WSI TruVu, Weather Central:LIVE, Baron FasTrac and VIPIR weather graphic display systems.
From 2013 to 2014, Gene took on the tough forecasting challenges of Central Alabama, serving as Chief Meteorologist for WIAT-TV in Birmingham. The region is known for a variety of weather threats and Gene led viewers through both the brutal winter in 2014 and the fourth-largest tornado outbreak in April. His continual, calm reporting for over 15 consecutive hours was credited for saving lives. Gene was also instrumental in the station's weather set and graphics re-design.
From 2008 to 2012, Gene Norman served as Chief Meteorologist at KHOU-TV in Houston, Texas. There, he earned two Lone Star Emmy awards for Best Weather Special and the Texas Associated Press Award for Best Weathercast. One Gene Norman's many highlights during his tenure was the continuous coverage he provided viewers before, during and after Hurricane Ike in September, 2008. Another was his accurate forecast and coverage of Houston's earliest snow on record as well as numerous severe weather outbreaks, heat waves and drought.
He pioneered the use of a daily subjective rating system called "The Norman Number". This one to ten scale rated the next day's weather, with ten being the very best day (cloudless, warm and dry) and one the worst (dramatic severe weather). Gene also developed the "Weather Where You Live" local forecast graphic that provided viewers with detailed forecasts for specific Houston neighborhoods.
Gene provided daily weather forecasts for radio partners as well as in-game forecast segments for the Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, Houston Astros and Houston Dynamo. Active in the community, Gene emceed dozens of charity signature events. He also serves on the Weather Research Center board, where he helped raised of $30,000 from corporate donors and served on the organizing committee for the first two National Flood Workshops.
Gene Norman served as Chief Meteorologist at WGCL-TV in Atlanta from 2000 to 2008. While there, Gene earned four Emmy awards for Best Weathercast and Best Weather Reporting as well as the Georgia Associated Press Award for Best Weathercast three years in a row. His television career began at KFDM in Beaumont, Texas and KTRK in Houston, after spending eight years as a programmer with NASA for the Spaceflight Meteorology program.
Gene Norman attended the University of Maryland, where he earned a Master of Science degree in meteorology. He recieved his Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
